Principal's Message - Posted January 9
Happy New Year to everyone in the AEA family. May 2017 be a powerful year for each of us. Our staff is looking to make 2017 a powerful year for our scholars. We are unwrapping several activities and opportunities for students that will build content knowledge, life skills, and lasting memories. We’re eager to make the second half of the school year amazing. More on these activities after we catch up on a few other announcements.
Your appreciation for the work our teachers and staff do came across very clearly going into the break. So many of you brought in notes, cards, and gifts to show how thankful you are. Thank you for taking the time during such a busy season to include your teachers in your holidays. We never expect gifts and notes from anyone and are always grateful for them.
Kudos to our kiddos for getting to school. Our attendance rate for the year is at 96%. While that is a great number, it is a bit of a slip since November. However, the holidays typically have that effect so if we keep focused then it is still possible to get close to 97% by the end of the year. While one percent sounds small, it equates to approximately $35,000 in revenue! That’s a win-win fund raiser. Your child gets more out of school, you don’t have to sell/buy anything, and the school gets more resources to make school better. Thanks for sending your kiddos every day.
Our second and third graders put on a lovely show just before break. They sang their little hearts out with beaming smiles and hand choreography. We were fortunate enough to be able to use the high school’s MPR while spending an evening with parents watching our scholars perform.
Third grade was busy at the end of last year. They also spent the night at the Aquarium of the Pacific. If you are looking to have a long conversation with someone, just ask one of the 3rd graders about the trip. They’ll talk your ear off! Thank you to our volunteers and teachers who braved a night in a sleeping bag on a hard floor next to a giant fish tank. Your effort created a valuable learning experience that they’ll always remember. To add to the 3rd grade amazing achievements, they even have some of their literacy fair projects on display at the Valencia Library. Well done scholars.
Our campus clean up day in December left a delightfully extra clean smell in each classroom and the teachers loved it. We also knocked a few items off the to-do list for campus maintenance. Whether it’s a clean up day or not, we can always use help cleaning and fixing. If you would like to contribute to the effort please let us know.
Our sports program just started the 2nd of this year’s three seasons. We love to see our athletes out there competing, getting exercise, and representing the school well. Go rockets. If you would like to be a part of the athletics program, we have one season left. You can find information about the program on our school website at aeasteam.weebly.com.
As stated at the top of this message, we are looking to make 2017 a productive year. Over the next few weeks you will be getting details about the upcoming Oratory Day, Science Fair, and Spelling Bee. Oratory Day will require kids to perform one or two short recitations to a small audience. There are multiple genres to pick from and we’re focusing on keeping it fun and fast paced. Once selected, the students will have two weeks to practice their piece which will only take a few minutes each night. Teachers have been asked to adjust homework loads to accommodate the practice. The Spelling Bee requires little preparation for the students as classes identify their top spellers to compete for the school’s top speller title. The winner gets to represent AEA at the county Spelling Bee. Finally, the science fair will require some effort and preparation. Specifics about participation will come from your teachers. Like the Spelling Bee, some students will represent AEA at the county Science Fair.
A separate message was sent today about our annual “gala” event called E2. This year’s event has a New Orlean’s theme to it and if it is anything like last year, it will be a great evening and a tremendous success. Please take the time to read about the event. This event does help raise funds to support AEA, but last year’s felt more like a great party. Many people are putting lots of effort into making the night memorable so don’t wait to get your tickets.
As parents we often find it hard to look at a school year as anything but a long succession of battling the daily grind of making lunches, checking homework, shuttling kids around, getting them to bed and dragging them out in the morning. While May 31 may seem like a long way off, we are already beginning to look beyond that. The admin team is laying groundwork now for the next school year. As we move forward with plans I look forward to getting your input and sharing what we’ve put together. With each step forward we will need your support to build the top notch World Language, STEAM focused, Project Based Learning school that we all signed up for.
As educators we get excited to work with kids and see them grow. We know that we can’t do that without you and thank you for giving us the opportunity to do what we love. Thank you for being a part of AEA.

Share a Sole
Start saving those shoes you are going to throw away and Share A Sole....
JANUARY 18TH - MARCH 25TH
We will be collecting gently used, pairs, of shoes. Please no flip flops or slippers.
Share a Sole is an effort that collects gently used shoes. Once the shoes are received at the Los Angeles warehouse, they are processed for exports to various countries in South America & Africa, where they create thousands of jobs for small businesses who resell them as a means of supporting their families. It's an amazing way to help so many people become self-sufficient and get them out of the poverty trap and on to a brighter path.
Every Day is the Season of Giving and there are plenty of ways our scholars can give back to the community. Check out the Community Service website at http://aeaelementarycommunityservice.weebly.com/ for great opportunities.

Canned Food Drive
Congratulations to Ms. Jacobsohn's 4th grade class for donating the most canned goods to our ASB sponsored canned food drive. Her class will get popsicles to celebrate their generosity. Altogether, the school donated almost 800 items to the Food Pantry in Newhall. ASB members went on a quick field trip to deliver the items on November 22nd. The staff were very appreciative of the donations and shared with the students how their efforts help people in the SCV. They were all great representatives of AEA and did a great job showing the entire school's community spirit.
Veteran's Day Ceremony - Posted November 10
Thank you to all of our Veterans who served in the armed forces. We also want to especially thank the Veterans who came out for our ASB sponsored Veteran's Day Ceremony. Your presence and participation in these events personalizes the holiday. Our scholars clearly saw that Veterans are simply everyday people who are willing to make big sacrifices for everyone in America. We are also proud of our newly elected ASB who put honoring Veterans as their first priority.
Our scholars brought in 354 pounds of candy which was the second best of all the schools! At a $1/lb that was a nice little fund raiser! WAY TO GO AEA!
